Laura's Classes

Feb. 16th  (Mon)

We took Laura's first class during the morning.  Laura taught us many things such as American culture.  After the class, we went to a supermarket, a pet shop and the movie theater near the study center.  After school, I saw Kiala and Kobe, who were twins.  I played with them until the evening.  Sometimes children came to our house and I enjoyed playing with them.

Feb. 17th  (Tue)

In the morning, we prepared for the welcome party.  We thought of some questions for our host family.  After that, we went to Tacoma Mall.  Before we went to the mall, we went to a doughnut shop.  We ate many kinds of doughnuts with Morgan, Logan and Kara, who came along with us.  We had time to buy some souvenirs at the mall, so I bought a lot of souvenirs for my friends and family.  In the evening, we held the welcome party.  All of our host families brought many dishes to the party, so we enjoyed many kinds of food.

Feb. 18th  (Wed)

I got up early to go to Leavenworth.  It took over 2 hours to arrive there, and I got carsick.  We first ate German cuisine in a restaurant.  Then, we went to many shops to see many goods and buy souvenirs.  Catriona, who was Laura's friend's daughter, joined us that day, and I went around with her.

Feb. 19th  (Thu)

We went to the city hall and the police department.  The people who showed us around their facility spoke so fast that I couldn't understand almost all their English.   In the evening, Kako's host mother Gwen took Kako, Mako and I to the Glass Museum.  It was so much more beautiful than I had expected.  I also saw a craftman making cups out of glass.

Feb. 20th  (Fri)

In the morning we talked about how we had spent the time with our host family, and then translated the Japanese folktale "Momo-taro" into English for Laura.  And then we went to Green River Community College to see our old friends, who were studying there.  After that, we visited a local retirement home.  We sang two Japanese songs in front of the elderlies.   After we finished the class, Jane took me to a restaurant, which was an American buffet style.  Their dishes were so delicious.

Feb. 23rd  (Mon)

In the morning we went to the fire station.  First, we asked fire fighters some questions.  Then, we experienced shooting water at a target.  After that, we went back to the study center and went to McDonald's to buy our lunch.  I was surprised that m&ms chocolates were in the McFlurry because we don't have them in Japan.  After we ate lunch, we made chocolate chip cookies to learn American measurements.

Feb. 24th  (Tue)

We visited an elementary school and gave children a presentation about how to count from 1 to 10 in Japanese throughout the day.  We did that in 6 classes.   During the break time, we played with the children outside.  It was a very busy day, but I enjoyed talking and playing with the children.

Feb. 25th  (Wed)

It was the day for Seattle sightseeing.  First, we visited the University of Washington.  It had a very big and beautiful library.  And then we went to Space Needle.  We didn't go up to the top because the weather was not so good.  We next did some shopping at Pike Place Market.  We also went to the first Starbucks Coffee store.  At the end of sightseeing, we went to Safeco Field.  In the evening I went home with Mako, Kako and Nami, and we made some handcrafts with Jane.

Feb. 26th  (Thu)

In the morning we made a Thank You card with Jane.  After lunch, we made a photo frame for our host family.

Feb. 27th  (Fri)

We went to a bowling alley.  Laura likes to bowl, so she taught me how to bowl well.  After that, I went home and cooked Japanese dinner for my family.   I made "Okonomi-yaki," simmering of pumpkin and "Nikujaga."

Mar. 2nd  (Mon)

In the morning we learned about American holidays such as Thanksgiving Day and ate turkey for lunch.  I was surprised that Laura cut the turkey with a knife like an electric saw.   After we ate lunch, we wore a Halloween's costume.  We also experienced Easter with Easter Egg Hunt.  After school, I went home with Kako and Rio.  We ate dinner and talked a lot.

Mar. 3rd  (Tue)

We made the photo frame throughout the day.  In the evening I spent time with Carter, who was Jane's grandchild.  He gave me a hug when I talked with him a few days before my departure for Japan.

Mar. 4th  (Wed)

It was the day for the Sayonara Party.  We went to Red Robin to eat late lunch.  I ate Fish & Chips and shared it with Nami.  After we ate lunch, we went back to the study center and practiced our presentation.  In the evening, all of our host families came to the study center for the party.  We showed them our presentation about "Nagaoka fireworks festival."  We did our best and made presentation successful.
