GRC

There are many students from all over the world at Green River College (GRC) , and they are with a wide range of age group. They study English at the IESL (International English as a Second Language). I studied English at IESL. There are five levels in the IESL. The students in Level 1 to 3 study at the Kent Campus and the students in Level 4 to 5 study at the main campus in Auburn. GRC has the academic program such as 4-year university as well.

Classes

Level 2 InstructorKen AssistantKaren

Ken is really kind and skillful in teaching English. He is interested in Asian culuture and likes Thai food. Basically he didn't give us homework, but we had to study for a chapter test, the mid-term test, and the final test by ourselves instead. The class atmosphere was good. I studied enjoyably. We had to write paragraphs every day.

Karen is the assistant to Ken and when we had a test, she often made cookies for us. If you go to the study hall, you can meet her.

Grammar

We studied grammar that we studied at junior high school in Japan. We rarely used a textbook, and we had a lot of group-work.

Reading / Writing

For reading, we had a group-work and a quiz. When Ken gave us some homework, we used a textbook.

For writing, we wacthed a movie in the latter half of the class and wrote a paragraph about the movie.

Speaking / Listening

For speaking, we chose a topic to practice speaking for 3 to 5 minutes.

For listening, we used a website that was introduced by Ken and we shared some information that we got from the speaker. After that, we wrote a paragraph about what the speaker said.

Level 3 InstructorEmilyGrammar & Reading/Writing

AmySpeaking/Listening

Emily is beautiful and serious. She tried to answer as many questions from us as posible. Also, the classmates were friendly and nice to me, so I enjoyed the grammar class. In particular, all of the reading tests made by Emily were the most difficult among the teachers in Level 3.

Amy is young and beautiful. She likes Korea and I thought she was humorous because whenever I took photos with her, she got into a unique pose by herself. I was scared at her at the beginning of the class because everybody called her “the level 3 killer.” It meant that it was really difficult for students to pass her class in level 3. However, I gradually enjoyed her class, and we had a party in her last class.

Grammar

We learned grammar more deeply than in level 2. We started learning comparatives and superlatives, too.

Reading / Writing

When I was in level 2, I didn't have to study for the reading tests, but I had trouble getting high scores in the reading tests in level 3.

For writing, we learned how to write paragraphs and essays and their construction.

Speaking / Listening

We made some presentations and practiced pronunciation.

For listening, we started to practice taking notes while we were watching a DVD for academic classes. It was hard to catch some words at the beginning, but I got used to it later. I recommend you to use “TED Talks” on YouTube.
