School Life

Green River College has two campuses. The Auburn campus is the main campus. The students over level 4 take classes at the main campus. The other students who are in level 1 to 3 take classes at the Kent campus. On the first orientation day, students take a test and are divided into 5 levels. I studied at the Kent campus. There are some restaurants and a movie theater near the Kent campus, so we can go shopping and eat out after school. Occasionally I took a class at the Auburn campus and in the library. Moreover, various events are held at the Auburn campus. You can join many events.

Classes

Level 2

Fall Quarter

Instructor: Gary

Gary taught us based on a textbook. We had to make a presentation just by ourselves. When I started my presentation, my classmates cheered me up. We sometimes had classes at the main campus, or went to the library. I was the only Japanese student in the class, so I was able to focus on studying. My classmates were interested in Japanese culture, and we enjoyed talking about Japanese anime. I had a great time with my classmates.

Grammar

We studied some grammar of Japanese junior high school level. I wasn't good at English grammar, so it was a good lesson.

Reading / Writing

We read handouts that Gary brought to class. We occasionally went to the libraly at the main campus and borrowed a book and read it. Gary gave students homework about the book. In the writing class, we practiced to write a paragraph.

Speaking / Listening

We had presentations by ourselves every 2 weeks. In the listening class, we used a textbook and listened to a CD.

Winter Quarter

Instructors: Ken, Karen

Ken's classes were easy to understand. He used some pictures for students. He spoke thoroughly and kindly. He often made students from different countries into a working pair. That's how I made friends with classmates from other countries. Karen often made cookies for students. We ate cookies in our free time. I went to the study hall almost every day. Karen taught us kindly there. My classmates were cheerful, and I enjoyed Ken's class.

Grammar

Ken used some pictures for students, so his classes were easy to understand. We wrote some answers on the whiteboard, and we checked them in class.

Reading / Writing

We read long passages. We learned paragraphs of various kinds and how to write them.

Speaking / Listening

We had presentations by ourselves every 2 weeks. Ken made us into a pair for conversation in front of the classmates. In the listening class, we watched some animation. Then, we wrote a paragraph about it.
