Classes and Teachers

Level 4

I was told to study in Level 5 at first, but I thought it might be too difficult for me to take it in the first quarter. That's why I decided to move down to Level 4. Actually, it was right. I still felt hard, even though I moved down to Level 4. Depending on the teacher, the class might be difficult or easy, so if you feel it is too difficult or easy when you attend your first class, you have a chance to change classes. You don't have to worry about the class level.

We learned basic grammar, how to write essays, and how to read effectively. Depending on the teacher, we need to take a test or quiz suddenly, so you need to review and preview what you study even though you have many assignments every day. In my case, I thought it was a chance to ask my classmates to study together.

We learned about the cultural background by feeling and seeing nature in real life on a field trip. We need to give a presentation in a group and write an essay individually about what we learned in the class. Though I couldn't understand much of what we learned because the contents were too specific, the class itself was interesting.

Patric had a sense of humor, but his class was really hard to understand because I didn't have listening skills and his facial expressions were hard to read. His speaking was really fast for me, so the first class was really good training to improve my English significantly.
Actually, I hesitated to communicate with my classmates at first, so Patric made me stand in front of all of them and made me dance, because my performance on the world wide stage was famous among the teacheas at the college.
This is my teacher in Level 4, Patric.

Level 5

After I passed Level 4 classes, I moved up to Level 5 classes, which are the highest for international students studying English. We took IEP classes and one academic class, which was either Interpersonal Communication or Public Speaking.

Almost the same as in Level 4 classes, we learned basic English, such as writing, reading, listening, note-taking, and so on. That was all about what we learned in high school. So, it was not difficult. On the other hand, we needed to study the contents of the academic class we chose. We were also able to ask the teacher about what we learned in the academic class in advance.

We learned about communication, from who I am to how to communicate with others effectively, by using a communication book and some movies. In the class, we needed to give presentations or skits and write essays. The hardest thing was to understand what the textbook said.

Renata is the kindest teacher that I have ever met. She always answered my questions politely and got rid of my anxiety whenever I asked her something. In addition, she cared about me like a mother and gave me many praises even when I couldn't do anything well.
This is my teacher in Level 5, Renata.

Facilities You May Often Use

SU                                                                     Most people use this building every day. It has a cafeteria, a bookstore, and many other spaces, so we can eat lunch, buy snacks or stationery, and see some shows with friends. Moreover, SU is always used by many people, so we can meet new students from even other counrties.

  CH
The new students who start studying need to take this class. In the class, we have Peer Mentors who help our school life, and we can enjoy the time that they prepare so that we can improve our skills as Green River students.
  Gym
There are some spaces for training and playing sports. On the first floor, there are two spaces. One space is for muscle training by using many machines. The other space is for playing badminton, basketball, and ballyball. You might feel it is difficult to join because there are many men who look very strong and are good at sports. However, they are very kind and teach us how to use the facility. You can also make friends from different countries by playing games together. On the second floor, there are wide mirrors, so many people use the space to dance and stretch.

                                                             Horman Library
They have many computers and resources for books, so you can use the computers to do your assignments and the books for your writing. When you need some help, you can ask a librarian. I often used the space to study with my friends. My favorite was the conversation room, where we were allowed to speak or eat.
  SH

I think most students use SH for their classes because it has many good classrooms.

Others Places I Used

CCA
If you have a friend who lives in CCA, you can study with them at CCA. And if they or you are good at cooking, you can make meals to concentrate more with your assignments.

Starbucks
There are a lot of Starbucks Coffee around GRC, so if you can afford to go out, you can study there with coffee and a good atmosphere. In addition, there are good opportunities to talk to native speakers of English. In fact, I was talked by a customer who sat next to me.

House of Your American Friend's
Your host family might have strict house rules. In that case, like CCA, if you want to study with friends while relaxing, I recommend you make American friends. Fortunately, my American friend invited me to his house, and I played games, enjoyed cooking, and had him teach me some crafts. On the other hand, some people might not feel safe enough to go to their house, so if you are invited by someone, you need to make sure of what they are like deeply.
